We live in such a politicized culture. It’s almost as if we have all these voices telling us, “Pick a side.” And it better be the right one or you’re a “nazi” or a “libtard.” We have the mainstream, even independent media, social media, celebrities, politicians, family, and friends urging us to speak up. “Pick a side.”
In 2017, “Nearly one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness (46.6 million in 2017). Let’s not even get into all the physical diseases & viruses that affect thousands daily, and also cost many lives yearly.
What about suicide?
Here are the statistics by America’s Health Rankings:
“Nationally, the suicide rate increased 25.4% from 1999 to 2016, with increases occurring in every state, save for Nevada. In 2017, there were an estimated 1.4 million suicide attempts and more than 47,000 deaths by suicide, making it the tenth leading cause of death in the United States. Firearms were involved in half of all suicides, and there were more than twice as many deaths by suicide than by homicide.”
What are the causes of these suicides nationally? According to the American’s Health Rankings, it’s mental illness, substance abuse, and environmental factors such as stressful life events.
My point? Why are we asking thousands of people to join a political cause when they are in pain, emotionally or physically? Sometimes, the best thing that we do is take care of ourselves first. We can’t ask people who are in pain to fight because they (some) can barely make it through the day. By this, I’m not saying that you can’t or that you shouldn’t, of course, just don’t feel the need to or feel guilty if you don’t have the desire to join a cause or take a stance on some political movement.
So, I want to say to anyone who is dealing with any mental illness, physical pain, and or loss & grief, fight for your self first. You have permission to turn off social media, not choose a side, and choose yourself.
It’s okay. Don’t let anyone pressure you. Your healing, your growth, your mental & physical health should be primal.
